Although composer Gaetano Donizetti wrote L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love)in haste, it has remained popular since its debut in 1828, and is one of the most performed operas worldwide.
Set in a village in the Basque region of Spain, at the end of the 18th century, the plot revolves around Nemorino (Roberto Alagna), a poor peasant, who has fallen in love with beautiful landowner Adina (Angela Georghiu). After hearing her recount the story of Tristan and Isolde to her workers, Nemorino is convinced that he needs a magic potion to make her love him.
Enter the quack salesman Dulcamara (Simone Alaimo), who obligingly sells him the potion he seeks, except that it is really only wine. Dulcamara tells Nemorino that the elixir will not work until tomorrow, so he can be safely away.
Watch how the plot is complicated by Nemorino’s belief that the magic potion will not work today, but only tomorrow!
